Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Almaty and City Tour
Salem! Welcome to Almaty and experience the vibrant cultural and culinary capital of Kazakhstan. Most international flights arrive early in the morning. You will be met at the airport and transferred to the iconic Hotel Kazakhstan. After the check-in at the hotel, you will have the opportunity to have breakfast before we start our city tour. The tour starts from Independence Square, then we continue our way to the renowned Kasteev State Art Museum. After the guided tour of the collections and exhibitions, we will have lunch at the restaurant Korsi, where we will enjoy traditional Kazakh cuisine in a very cozy setting. After lunch, we will explore the Panfilov park and Zenkov cathedral. In the evening, we have reservations at restaurant Tarih, where guests will enjoy the special welcome dinner as per Kazakh tradition.

Day 2: Almaty - Medeu - Shymbulak

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to Shymbulak, the largest ski-resort in Central Asia. Shymbulak offers breathtaking mountain vistas and thrilling activities just outside Almaty. When check-ins are completed at the Qazaq Auyl Hotel, we will go for a hike to explore Ile Alatau National Park. Mynjylky route leads to an open plateau with beautiful lush landscapes. This easy hike is perfect for beginners, featuring gentle slopes and expansive grass fields (approx. 1-2 hours). Upon returning, we will head to SYN32 restaurant at the top of the resort for our deserved lunch with unforgettable views. After that, guests are welcome to choose from a range of activities such as skating at Medeu, horse riding or just join the party at the bar. In the evening, modern Kazakh cuisine with entertainment will be waiting for the guests at the famous Auyl Restaurant. You are also welcome to try the saunas at the hotel, which is a popular form of relaxation in Kazakh mountains.

Day 3: Shymbulak - Lake Issyk - Turgen Gorge

Have a beautiful morning with the view of Ile Alatau mountains and have breakfast at Qazaq Auyl before departing. After the meal, we will head out to Turgen Gorge, located near Talgar, it will take about 1.5 hours, excluding traffic jams on the highway to get there. On the way to the gorge, we will stop by Lake Issyk, a picturesque alpine lake surrounded by mountains and flower fields. As well as visit the local reserve museum to learn about the Saka, proto-nomads and a large-scale monument to the almost mythical golden man. After the small detour, we will head to a trout farm for lunch. There will be an opportunity to catch your own fish at the farm if one is up for the challenge. Hike to the Turgen Gorge will be followed with serene landscapes, dense forests and waterfalls. We will take a small break and enjoy the view at the Bear Falls, and continue our journey until we reach the Tumar Yurts, where we will spend the night. Staying in the yurt is a unique nomadic experience that will include traditional kazakh dinner and music as per tradition.

Day 4: Turgen Gorge - Asy Plateau - Bartogay Lake

Wake up in the traditional kazakh yurt, just like the nomads of the past, accompanied by a glorious morning breakfast. After a delicious meal, we will head out to Asy Plateau, formerly known for being a hub for merchants in the ancient times, today it will impress anyone who visits with its mesmerizing rolling green hills and pastures. It is also home to the Asy-Turgen Observatory, one of the largest telescopes in the world. We will stop at the observatory to have lunch, recharge and enjoy the landscape. Our epic adventure will continue to the Bartogay Reservoir and we will hop on the 4x4 vehicle and spend 3 hours on the road enjoying the view. The reservoir is proof that man made structures can create natural beauty too. Upon arriving at Bartogay Lake, we will go for a hike around the reservoir to further explore this impressive area, while the crew will set up the camp and prepare the dinner before we return. Have a hearty meal under the night sky full of bright stars to finish the day.

Day 5: Bartogay Lake - Kolsay Lakes

After breakfast at the camp near the lake, we will head out to the Kolsay Lakes, nestled in the Kungey - Alatau ridge. Named “The Pearls of Tian Shan”, the chain of several lakes formed at different altitudes, followed by deep mountain slopes showcase one the most beautiful places in Kazakhstan. After the check-in at the Kolsay Nomads hotel, we will start exploring the first lake, located at the base of the mountain. We will recharge and have lunch with a magnificent view at the Tary cafe located not too far away. After the meal, there will be an option to head out for the second lake with a 1 km hike and the gentle accession only after halfway off the trail. Diverse flora and fauna can be seen on the way there. Also, there will be an opportunity to go for a thematic horse riding instead. After a day full of activities, head back to the hotel to have a well deserved rest and delicious evening meal and tea session.

Day 6: Kolsay Lakes - Charyn Canyon

Have breakfast under the quaint panoramic view of the lake at Kolsay Nomads before departing for Charyn Canyon, located in Charyn National Park. After the check-in at the Tautas Charyn Glamping we will begin the tour around the park. Home to many endangered species of Kazakhstan, the national park was created in 2004 to protect the biodiversity of the area. We will explore the park, including the Temirlik tract, rivers, canyons, depressions, and even see the antelopes, native to the location, if we are lucky. Tary Charyn cafe will be our stopping point for some refreshments and lunch. The view of a mountain backdrop and canyons will be a pleasant addition to the drinks and meals served at the table. We will continue our trail through the canyon, taking short breaks for rest and pictures. The dinner will be served at the glamping camp upon our return to the site.

Day 7: Charyn Canyon - Tekes Waterfall

After breakfast at the glamping camp, we will head out for a 2h30 drive to the village of Tekes and Tekes Waterfall that are situated near the Chinese border. The Tekes Waterfall has been eroding the surrounding rock formations by forming a deep pool. Although it’s small in size, it is still a beautiful sight to witness. On the way to the waterfall, we will see a magnificent panorama of overwhelming cliffs, rushing rivers, coniferous forests, and alpine meadows. Sometimes you will see the yurts and sheep herders along the route since there are many jaylaus (summer pastures) in the area. When we pass the village and arrive at the location, the waterfall can be seen from a height, and we will carefully descend to it. Below, we will enjoy the chilled ambience, the shade, and the icy-cold mountain water, which will be the perfect opportunity to set up Yurt camp and rest. After lunch, we will further explore the area for its diverse flora and fauna, and scenic observation decks. Dinner will be served at the camp, while enjoying the pristine nature of Tekes.

Day 8: Tekes Waterfall - Lake Tuzkol

Have an incredible morning view while having breakfast near the Tekes Waterfall. After the meal, we will continue our epic tour to Lake Tuzkol, a unique saline lake tucked between the mountains of Elshyn Buyryk, Karatau, and Jabyrtau. These mountains are part of the Northern Tien Shan ranges. The lake is fed by springs and rivers flowing down from the surrounding rocky slopes therefore many springs are highly mineralized. Given that the lake is fully landlocked, it remains within its borders only due to the evaporation of water. The salinity of Lake Tuzkol varies according to the seasons. Yurt camp and horses will be waiting for us at a location near the lake. We will rest at the camp and have lunch before we start exploring the area. There will be an opportunity to go around the lake by foot or horse riding, depending on your preference. After a full day of activities, we will come back to the camp for dinner and spend a night in a yurt.

Day 9: Lake Tuzkol - Shalkode Valley

Wake up for a delicious morning breakfast at Lake Tuzkol before embarking on the road to Shalkode Valley. This immense pasture is the largest valley in Kazakhstan, which is also part of the Tien Shan mountain ranges. By comparison, Shalkode Valley is almost twice the size of the Asy Plateau and Turgen Gorge. Some families who still lead a nomadic way of life can be seen on the green rolling hills, tending their flock and pastures. The yurt camp will be set up upon our arrival to the valley, which will be followed by lunch in nature. Traditional Kazakh games, including archery and kokpar will be displayed and guests will have the chance to join to play like the real nomads of the ancient past. Dinner will be served in the yurt for a more immersive experience.

Day 10: Shalkode Valley - Dobun

After breakfast at the camp, we will journey on our 4x4 off-road vehicle to the Dobun valley by crossing the Ketmen mountain range in the north, known for its incredibly beautiful gorges. Commonly seen mountain flowers such as Edelweiss, have become the symbol of climbers and mountain tourists. We will start ascending until we reach the top to set a temporary camp for lunch and rest. After a meal with panoramic views of the valley and mountains, we will begin the descent to the Dobun valley. Hot springs and many other amenities will be waiting for us at Eco Park Hotel which will be the ideal concluding experience after a tour, highlighting the best of Almaty region. Farewell dinner will be served at the restaurant of the hotel, celebrating all the new friends we made along the way. Our epic Almaty hiking adventure has come to an end.

Day 11: Departing Dobun

We will depart for Almaty after our breakfast at the hotel. Our services are available if you need to transfer from the city center to the train station, the airport or a hotel.
